Endlich auch als Buch und endlich auf Deutsch!

Thought Experimentation in Philosophy

Author: Nicholas Rescher

Publisher: Routledge

ISBN: 1351321862

Category: Philosophy

Thought experimentation has been a staple of philosophical methodology since classical antiquity, when Xenophanes of Colophon speculated that if horses had gods, they would be equine in form. Nicholas Rescher's What If? undertakes a systematic survey of the role and utility of thought experiments in philosophy. After surveying the historical issues, Rescher examines the principles involved, and explains the conditions under which thought experimentation can validly yield instructive results in philosophy. The reader gains understanding of the differences between scientific and philosophical experiments. What If? begins by examining the nature of thought experiments. It presents an overview of how thought experiments have figured in natural science and in historical studies, before moving on to examine how they function as an instrument of philosophical inquiry. After examining thought experiments from the pre-Socratics to the present day, Rescher turns from history to analysis, and examines the modes of reasoning involved in the use of speculative hypotheses in philosophical problem solving. He shows the limitations of speculative ontology, showing that thought experimentation can lead readily to paradox in a way that increasingly diminishes its usefulness. The book concludes by arguing and illustrating how and when it becomes pointless to push speculation, or thought experimentation beyond the limits of intelligibility and cogent sense. Among the principal features of Rescher's book is its elaborate analysis of the appropriate conditions for philosophical thought experimentation. Its cardinal thesis is that there indeed are limits to the appropriateness of this important methodological resource and that transgressing these limits destroys the prospect of drawing any valid lessons for the philosophical enterprise. What If? will be of interest to philosophers, students of philosophy, and theorists of logic and reasoning.

How many of us have made the decision to put ourselves at-risk in the work site? Now that we have answered that question with, “I have”, how many of us have ever sat around after making that decision and said, “I knew that was going to happen”? This book is about watching people very early on in my career who constantly took risks to benefit the company’s bottom line. When I saw others do it, I decided to do it also. The results were a life time of escalating at-risk behaviour and then ultimately paying a tremendous personal price for it. In this book I share my revelations, and rationalise why I and others like me kept doing the unsafe acts. I share many heartfelt stories, some that end humourously and some that end tragically. I promise you that everything in this book is a real as it gets. Sometimes fact is indeed more terrifying than fiction. Thousands of people have attended my seminars and been moved by my lifetime of recollections. This book continues the sharing process on larger scale. For all the wrong reasons, please enjoy this book of my life.

What if Christianity is simple? When Jesus gave his first public address, he said, “I have come to fulfill the law and the prophets and to set the captives free.” When a contract is fulfilled, it is completed and is no longer in effect. Religion is a form of bondage that enslaves its adherents to a set of rules that constitute sin. It portrays the image of a God who acts as a judge. In one hand he has a legal pad and pen and in the other a club. When sufficient sins have been committed, the club is used on the sinner. Jesus died on the cross to fulfill the need for justice and came to earth to show that God is not the ogre with a club but a loving father with outstretched arms wanting to hug his children He sent to us the Holy Spirit so we might have the heart and mind of Christ and be empowered to live a life free from the bondage of sin and religion. This book shows the reader how to do that and points out the stumbling blocks that may interfere. It enables the reader to see the simplicity of Christianity and understand why it should surpass religion in our lives.
