THE NEW NOVEL FROM THE AUTHOR OF THE #1 BESTSELLER THE STONE MAN PRAISE FOR LUKE SMITHERD'S WRITING: ..". a novel that intrigues, enthralls, horrifies, thrills, and hits the reader with an emotional resonance as only the best stories can." - Ain't It Cool News.com ..". strong characterization, moral quandaries, mystery, and a whole lot of tense moments. Reading the final sentence was truly a bittersweet moment." - SFsignal.com, Hugo award-winning website Martin Hogan is being watched, all of the time. He just doesn't know it yet. It started a long time ago, too, even before his wife died. Before he started walking every day. Before the walks became an attempt to find a release from the whirlwind that his brain has become. He never walks alone, of course, although his 18 month old son and his faithful dog, Scoffer, aren't the greatest conversationalists. Then the walks become longer. Then the other dog starts showing up. The big white one, with the funny looking head. The one that sits and watches Martin and his family as they walk away. All over the world, the first attacks begin. The Brotherhood of the Raid make their existence known; a leaderless group who randomly and inexplicably assault both strangers and loved ones without explanation. Martin and the surviving members of his family are about to find that these events are connected. Caught at the center of the world as it changes beyond recognition, Martin will be faced with a series of impossible choices ... but how can an ordinary and broken man figure out the unthinkable? What can he possibly do with a head full of knives? Luke Smitherd (author of the Amazon bestseller THE STONE MAN and THE BLACK ROOM series) asks you once again to consider what you would do in his latest unusual and original novel. A HEAD FULL OF KNIVES is a supernatural mystery that will not only change the way you look at your pets forever, but will force you to decide the fate of the world when it lies in your hands. PRAISE FOR LUKE SMITHERD: "Fantastically written characters who make you care about them right from the off." - Andy Pettifer "It was one of those books where you tell yourself you will read just one more page, then look at the clock and realise that it's 2 hours later. I would thoroughly recommend it" - Elaine Hosegood "I have owned a Kindle for about 2 years and downloaded some excellent books for very little cost but Luke Smitherd's works beat the lot" - Silversmith, Amazon UK Review "As soon as I started reading I was completely sucked in, which very rarely happens for me. I couldn't wait to get home and read it each night. I laughed. I cried. I did actual real life gasps of horror." - Katie, Amazon Review "I spend a lot of time trawling through the kindle book store looking for cheap books, relying on reviews to make my purchases. I have come across some less than average books using this method, but also some real gems. This book definitely falls into the latter category. It had me gripped from page one."- Steve Sut, Amazon UK Review "This story could, probably should, be made into a movie at some point. I honestly have to believe that Smitherd should contact a producer/director and make a fabulous movie deal. Totally enjoyed the read." - Bonnie Gleckler Clark, Goodreads

The Supernatural in Modern English Fiction

The subject of the supernatural in modern English fiction has been found difficult to deal with because of its wealth of material. While there has been no previous book on the topic, and none related to it, save Mr. C. E. Whitmore’s work on The Supernatural in Tragedy, the mass of fiction itself introducing ghostly or psychic motifs is simply enormous. It is manifestly impossible to discuss, or even to mention, all of it. Even in my bibliography which numbers over three thousand titles, I have made no effort to list all the available examples of the type. The bibliography, which I at first intended to publish in connection with this volume, is far too voluminous to be included here, so will probably be brought out later by itself. It would have been impossible for me to prosecute the research work or to write the book save for the assistance generously given by many persons. I am indebted to the various officials of the libraries of Columbia University and of New York City, particularly to Miss Isadore Mudge, Reference Librarian of Columbia, and to the authorities of the New York Society Library for permission to use their priceless out-of-print novels in the Kennedy Collection. My interest in English fiction was increased during my attendance on some courses in the history of the English novel, given by Dr. A. J. Carlyle, in Oxford University, England, several years ago. I have received helpful bibliographical suggestions from Professor Blanche Colton Williams, Dr. Dorothy Brewster, Professor Nelson Glenn McCrea, Professor John Cunliffe, and Dean Talcott Williams, of Columbia, and Professor G. L. Kittredge, of Harvard. Professors William P. Trent, George Philip Krapp, and Ernest Hunter Wright very kindly read the book in manuscript and gave valuable advice concerning it, Professor Wright going over the material with me in detail. But my chief debt of gratitude is to Professor Ashley H. Thorndike, Head of the Department of English and Comparative Literature in Columbia, whose stimulating criticism and kindly encouragement have made the book possible. To all of these—and others—who have aided me, I am deeply grateful, and I only wish that the published volume were more worthy of their assistance.

A treatise of a 1700''s abbot monk Augustin Calmet surfaced two centuries ago regarding the supernatural and scientific phenomenon that plagued Europe in an era when Magic, witchcraft, demonology, instances of haunting and even cases of vampires were recorded in historical documentation. It was during the age of reason when a Black Monk from the Benedictine Order of the 18th century, penned a work that would become one of the most influential and controversial works of his time. A plethora of cases regarding events in the supernatural had plagued mankind with fear and mystery throughout history, many inhabitants to the regions of Europe came under an epidemic of social hysteria which steamed from reports of corpses rising from their graves, killing and sucking the blood of victims inhabiting small villages or visitations and the haunting of ghosts, evil spirits and demons. The Black Monk, Abbot Don Augustin Calmet tasked himself with the study of these real and historically documented reports for the purpose of providing the public with the rules to determine a claim''s legitimacy through philosophical reasoning and scientific examination that was approved by the King of France in 1746. This work provides an in depth look into the history of most superstitions, mythologies, the analysis of events depicted in ancient texts from various religions and historically renowned cases which had in fact occurred. Calmet lays out the rules for determining the fraudulent claims from the real while also providing a "how to" manual when dealing with or investigating occult matters in witchcraft, ghosts, vampires and demonic possessions. This work was written by an ordained abbot monk and was accepted by European society as scientific research in his time. This new edition includes translations from the French and Italian works that are being published for the first time! Including the missing letters, detailed notes definitions, and translations of Latin, Italian and French phrases quotes and citations This treatise investigates a number of topics: VOL I DISSERTATION ON THE APPEARANCE OF ANGELS DEMONS SPIRITS / SPECTERS MAGIC, WITCHES, WIZARDS, ORACLES, POSSESSIONS, ETC VOL II DISSERTATION ON THE APPARITIONS OF THE SOULS OF THE DEAD THE APPEARANCE OF THE LIVING AS PROJECTIONS THE GHOSTS WHO RETURN TO THE EARTHLY BODY THE OUPIRES OR VAMPIRES, VROUCOLACAS, ETC. From Volume 1* Angelic and demonic intervention * The reality and mythology of magic; divination; curses * Understanding the difference between real accounts vs that of impostors * Examples and instances of real possessions caused by the devil * The power and authority which Satan and demons possess * False prophets and predictions of happenstance;* The appearance and examinations of specters and pretended specters * Examinations on Specters that haunt houses * The dead who return to the earth * Explanations and objections on the instances of apparitions; * The studies on Familiars; Elves * The secrets of physics and chemistry taken as supernatural things Also included from volume 2 * Resurrection of the dead * Instances of people returning from the grave * Examination to people being buried alive but thought to be dead * Examinations of (then) modern revenants, ghosts and vampires * The study of vampires, ghosts in mythology and religions * Historically recorded accounts of vampires between the 17th and 18th centuries * Examinations on bodies that do not decay and corpses that show life after death * The power of demons to kill and restore life * On the return of the excommunicated * Instances of bodies that devour their own flesh * Instances on exhumed bodies and their examinations * Analysis on whether vampires or revenants are truly dead * Instances of people returning from the grave months after declared deceased.

This charmingly spooky novel is set in Pelican River, southwest of Perth, in the 1920s. With all the charm and coziness of a BBC TV period drama, the story plays out in the aftermath of the First World War. It is centered around the eccentric and newly widowed Ruth, her butler Rutherford, and her aunt Julia, together with Ruth's inventor neighbor Gordon and his raft of hounds, and the elusive and sinister demon, Mr. Nor. Humor abounds and the characters explore the new ideas in science and physics of the era, as well as the development of science fiction itself, with cameos by the likes of Mr. H. G. Wells. This supernatural crime mystery also bears the traces of the effect of war on a nation and its people.
