A 2019 NEWBERY HONOR BOOK "A gripping, nuanced story of the human cost of conflict appropriate for both children and adults." -Kirkus, starred review In the vein of Inside Out and Back Again and The War That Saved My Life comes a poignant, personal, and hopeful tale of India's partition, and of one girl's journey to find a new home in a divided country It's 1947, and India, newly independent of British rule, has been separated into two countries: Pakistan and India. The divide has created much tension between Hindus and Muslims, and hundreds of thousands are killed crossing borders. Half-Muslim, half-Hindu twelve-year-old Nisha doesn't know where she belongs, or what her country is anymore. When Papa decides it's too dangerous to stay in what is now Pakistan, Nisha and her family become refugees and embark first by train but later on foot to reach her new home. The journey is long, difficult, and dangerous, and after losing her mother as a baby, Nisha can't imagine losing her homeland, too. But even if her country has been ripped apart, Nisha still believes in the possibility of putting herself back together. Told through Nisha's letters to her mother, The Night Diary is a heartfelt story of one girl's search for home, for her own identity...and for a hopeful future.

John Hartwell, a 31-year-old married house carpenter from Herkimer, New York, enlisted in the Union Army on 23 August 1862, over his wife's objections. For the next two and one-half years, Hartwell filled six diaries and one hundred one letters describing his journey through hell. In 1989, Professor Ann Hartwell Britton discovered Hartwell's hoard of letters and five of the diaries among family papers in Florida and Massachusetts. Britton and her law faculty colleague Thomas J. Reed have, in this volume, copied, annotated, and edited Hartwell's letters and diaries for use by scholars of the Middle Period and by general readers interested in the common soldier's understanding of the War between the States. Hartwell lived through every major battle of the Army of the Potomac from Antietam to the Wilderness, Spotsylvania Court House and Second Cold Harbor. Since Hartwell was a draftsman as well as a builder, he carefully mapped his regiment's actions in some of those battles, as well as his winter quarters in 1863-64.

David, the narrator of "Diary: Alone on Earth," is a loner, but he is yet to discover what true loneliness feels like. David suffered a great tragedy in life, so he has decided to cut himself completely loose from all those who love him. This man now feels safe inside his comfort shell, having abandoned friends, family for a hermit lifestyle in a tiny Alabama town. But his world is turned upside down on one particular day: November 16, 2016. An intermittent humming noise is emitted throughout the entire world. No one seems to understand from where it is originating. Russia suspects the United States is up to something, and is threatening war. India has suddenly invaded Pakistan due to their age-old hatred. Droves of people are committing suicide throughout the world. President Obama has put the U.S. Military at Defcon 3. Animals, particularly birds, are very hard hit by this humming noise. All the talking heads on the news channels are describing the day's bizarre events. That night, David goes to sleep with his beloved beagle, Ralph, at the foot of his bed. They both feel a little sick, both hope the humming noise is past them. David thinks tomorrow it will all have blown over. He is wrong.

There was a full moon and high tide, a sea of glittering little waves strutting towards the Gulf, only to be swallowed by bigger waves. A shaky silver reflection of the moon brightened the dark river, broken every now and then by a man's dark shadow in the middle of a little canoe sliding to an unknown destination, like a sea bird, singing a popular song in the sweet local dialect, "I would ask if I could reach the heavens, why you bless some with all the luxuries and a loaf of bread tainted with blood for others?" And then from as far away as one could see, deep in the dark, beyond all the old tall palm trees touching the clouds, kissing the moon, a muffled voice chanted, hard to hear, fading from-time-to-time, interrupted by the oars gently cutting through the river's warm water and a cool breeze going from cheek to cheek chanted: "Why do you come to my dream every night if you don't love me?" The river was silent, the night empty, the voices heavenly.
