This primer provides an introduction to the subject of surfaces at the level of undergraduates and first year postgraduates. There are four chapters, the first concerns basic thermodynamic material used to understand the properties of surfaces including; surface tension, Gibbs adsorption, surface pressure and surface phase equilibria, surfactants and micelles, wetting, detergency, and contact angle. The second chapter concentrates on gas adsorbtion at solid surfaces and covers topics including adsorbtion, Langmuir isotherms, heats of adsorbtion, BET isotherms, physisorbtion, chemisorbtion, precursor adsorbtion kinetics, well-defined surfaces, UHV, surface sensitivity and selectivity, surface diffusion and electrons interacting with matter. Chapter three then outlines the physico- chemical principles of XPS, AES, LEED, STM, AFM, work function measurements, UPS, TPD, molecular beams, HREELS and PAIRS and the types of fundamental surface information each of these techniques provides. The final chapter contains a series of worked examples and problems, bringing together the various strands developed in Chapters 1-3 in order to elucidate surface phenomena. The book is unique in its mix of 'Classical' and 'Modern' surface science and should be relevant to physicists, chemists and material scientists.

Increasing concern about pollution, our health, and our safety has increased our tendency to monitor all aspects of our environment. In the future portable sensing systems will be available to monitor almost everything of interest to us. The heart of these sensing systems will be chemical sensors - devices which detect and measure very small amounts of chemicals. Assuming no prior knowledge of chemistry, this book explains in a clear and concise manner how these devices work.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the international Symposium on Graph Drawing, GD '95, held in Passau, Germany, in September 1995. The 40 full papers and 12 system demonstrations were selected from a total of 88 submissions and include, in their revised versions presented here, the improvements suggested during the meeting. This book also contains a report on the graph-drawing contest held in conjunction with GD '95. Graph drawing is concerned with the problem of visualizing structural information, particularly by constructing geometric representations of abstract graphs and networks. The importance of this area for industrial applications is testified by the large number of people with industrial affiliations, submitting papers and participating in the meeting.

Due to its easy writing style, this is the most accessible book on the market. It provides comprehensive coverage of both plates and shells and a unique blend of modern analytical and computer-oriented numerical methods in presenting stress analysis in a realistic setting. Distinguished by its broad range of exceptional visual interpretations of the solutions, applications, and means by which loads are carried in beams, plates and shells. Combining the modern-numerical, mechanics of materials, and theory of elasticity methods of analysis, it provides an in-depth and complete coverage of the subject, not explored by other texts. Its flexible organization allows instructors to more easily pick and choose topics they want to cover, depending on their course needs. Students are exposed to both the theory and the latest applications to various structural elements. Two new chapters on the fundamentals provide a stronger foundation for understanding the material. An increased emphasis on computer tools, and updated problems, examples, and references, expose students to the latest information in the field.

Darwin's book introduced the scientific theory that populations evolve over the course of generations through a process of natural selection. It presented a body of evidence that the diversity of life arose by common descent through a branching pattern of evolution.

The chemistry and biochemistry of carbohydrates have become key research areas throughout the world. Responding to the enormous interest expressed in these fields, this new book has brought together a range of contributors, each working at the forefront of carbohydrate chemistry and biochemistry to provide concise authoritative and timely review of these exciting areas. Aimed at chemists, biochemists and biologists, the reader will find this book an invaluable introduction to and review of the most important developments in carbohydrate chemistry. As a distinct chemical group, the carbohydrates comprising mono-, oligo-, and polysaccharides and their derivatives are the most abundant group of natural products. From simple monosaccharides produced in photosynthesis to polysaccharides built in complex biochemical reactions, carbohydrates are produced in huge quantities by plant and animal life. Apart from dietary and structural uses in plants and animals, it is now well established that carbohydrates play a number of key roles in living systems. From cell-cell recognition to hormonal activities, carbohydrates are implicated in a wide range of cellular processes. This new understanding has forced the study of carbohydrates to the forefront of modern chemical research. For example, the nature of the role of carbohydrates in living systems offers the potential to provide important lead compounds in the development of new bioactive molecules. Similarly, the relative abundance of carbohydrates is prompting research aimed at utilizing simple monosaccharides as starting materials for a range of high value chemical product, offering a renewable alternative to current starting materials.
