Orpha Westcott's Story is the result of the author's work as a docent for the 1908 Frank Lloyd Wright Westcott House in Springfield, Ohio. Being a Wright fan, more about the owner's choice of Wright as an architect was intriguing. Further research indicated it was Orpha Westcott who actually worked with Wright in designing the only Prairie Style.house in Ohio. She was a woman ahead of her time, an independent thinker whose insight created a piece of Wright history. Barbara Studebaker Arnold is a retired Language Arts teacher living in Enon, Ohio with her husband of 51 years and two very spoiled cats. She has grown children and grandchildren. She has a Master of Science Degree in Education from the University of Dayton. Now retired from teaching, she has time to pursue the many activities she had no time for earlier. She enjoys volunteering, painting, traveling and writing. She is an active docent for tours at the 1854 Hertzler House, the 1908 Frank Lloyd Wright Westcott House, and the Cox Arboretum. She has composed many poems and written scripts for various performance events. Her first two books were fictional biographies of Daniel and Catharine Hertzler Her third book of fiction, using some of her teaching experiences; called Indian Summer didn't seem complete which led to the sequel A Tale of Two Weddings. She readily admits she is so busy she doesn't know how she had time to teach.

This book tells the amazing story from the Avanti inception in South Bend, Indiana, to its current status in Cancun, Mexico. Many original source documents, factory photographs, corporate records, advertisements and first hand accounts trace the evolution of this American classic. The Avanti design was conceived by one of the greatest industrial designers Raymond Loewy and his associates for Studebaker. The Avanti was Studebakers shining star for a brief period of time (1963-1964 models years) before the company exited the automobile manufacturing business in the United States in December of 1963. The Avanti exhibited phoenix like traits a number of times since and has gone through more than a handful of owners along with updates in design, maintaining a loyal customer base large enough to support production as a luxury specialty car on and off for more than 45 years. Get the full scoop on the companies and people who helped keep Avanti alive.

Dictators, Democracy, and American Public Culture

Envisioning the Totalitarian Enemy, 1920s-1950s

Author: Benjamin L. Alpers

Focusing on portrayals of Mussolini's Italy, Hitler's Germany, and Stalin's Russia in U.S. films, magazine and newspaper articles, books, plays, speeches, and other texts, Benjamin Alpers traces changing American understandings of dictatorship from the late 1920s through the early years of the Cold War. During the early 1930s, most Americans' conception of dictatorship focused on the dictator. Whether viewed as heroic or horrific, the dictator was represented as a figure of great, masculine power and effectiveness. As the Great Depression gripped the United States, a few people--including conservative members of the press and some Hollywood filmmakers--even dared to suggest that dictatorship might be the answer to America's social problems. In the late 1930s, American explanations of dictatorship shifted focus from individual leaders to the movements that empowered them. Totalitarianism became the image against which a view of democracy emphasizing tolerance and pluralism and disparaging mass movements developed. First used to describe dictatorships of both right and left, the term "totalitarianism" fell out of use upon the U.S. entry into World War II. With the war's end and the collapse of the U.S.-Soviet alliance, however, concerns about totalitarianism lay the foundation for the emerging Cold War.

Although there have been many Jeep books, this is the first complete history of the Willys-Overland passenger cars, civilian trucks (as well as civilian and military Jeeps) along with the corporation's history. Illustrated with rare and unusual factory photos and period ads, the Willys-Overland saga begins in 1903 when the Standard Wheel Company began making Overland cars. Soon after, auto dealer John North Willys was forced by circumstances to rescue the failing Overland company. By 1916 Willys had become the second-best selling car in the world. Prospering in the '20s but then bankrupt a decade later, the firm crawled back from the edge in time to win the all-important Jeep contract that ensured Willys would survive. Even after Kaiser Motors bought Willys in 1953 its products were still branded Willys until 1963 when the name was phased out. The final new Willys Jeep introduced - the Wagoneer - became a legend in its own right. Also covered are the pre-war coupes modified into high-powered racers.
