The Church today is in the middle of a powerful storm, the intensity of which is likely to increase in the future. Many Christians are bewildered and concerned by what they see—a culture that’s become increasingly hostile to biblical Christianity and a church whose vital signs are quickly waning. In Strong through the Storm, pastor and bestselling author Jim Cymbala speaks to every Christian who is concerned about the challenges the church is facing in America today. Using powerful stories of people who have been transformed by Christ, Cymbala offers hope, helping Christians to understand that a life surrendered to Christ will not be easily defeated, even in the midst of growing hostility toward Christians. No matter how much spiritual darkness encompasses the world, the light of the gospel cannot be suppressed. Some churches are coming at the storm with harsh legalism, but Cymbala explains that the message needs to be grace. We need to understand the spiritual battle we are in and use the right weapons against it, says Cymbala. We are not struggling against the leaders of this world or the people in the battle, we are struggling against our spiritual enemy, and we need to fight with the Word of God, prayer, and the Holy Spirit. We don’t need more church growth programs to turn the church around. What’s needed is a transformation so that the gospel is preached, the Holy Spirit is allowed to lead, and lives are changed.

We live in a society filled with broken people. Over the years the church has had to make a fundamental decision regarding those of us who have faced such trying times. This book, although speaks about divorce, death, financial difficulties, is a book about how someone like me faced one of the most difficult times in my life. This book is not about how unfaithful we are, but rather, how faithful God is. Through some of our darkest times-those caused by our own choices and those allowed by God, we see just how faithful God is. If you are struggling to find answers, if you are struggling to find solutions, this book is written for you. It demonstrates through the Word of God that we could find peace in some of life's most dangerous storms. The storm of death, the storm of divorce, the storm of financial ruin are nothing compared to God's ability to take our broken world and heal it. All too often the church has failed to minister to those of us who are broken, to those of us who have baggage, and to those of us who need deep spiritual, emotional, and psychological healing. This book chronicles my marriage that fell a part when my then wife lost a pregnancy. Watching my marriage fall a part and incapable of fixing it, I journeyed on a 40 day fast. This book is the result of the insight God gave me concerning my hardship. I invite you to take this journey with me and hopefully along the way you discover what I did so many years ago. The very fact that God is faithful and that no matter what you are facing God is on your side.

The weather has always been a favorite topic of conversation. Undoubtedly, someone must have said to Noah, "I thought they said it was supposed to let up on Tuesday." Over a century ago, American essayist Charles Dudley Warner wrote in the HartfordCourant, "Everybody talks about the weather but nobody does anything about it." And now with the advent of the 24-hour Weather Channel and high-tech radar and satellite imagery, we have more information about the weather at our disposal than ever before. But what about weather in the past? Is the climate changing? Are the summers hotter now than ever before? Were winters colder when our grandparents were children? In The Pennsylvania Weather Book, meteorologist Ben Gelber provides the first comprehensive survey of 250 years of recorded weather in this state. He reports on noteworthy weather happenings by category (snowstorms, rainstorms, cold and heat waves, thunderstorms, and tropical storms) and places them in historical context. Throughout the book, Gelber clearly defines meteorological terms and explains what creates weather events. The book features appendices and tables containing useful references for average temperatures, precipitation, snowfall, and climate data. It also provides a brief history of the weather watchers who contributed to the state's meteorological records since the late eighteenth century. This volume will serve as a valuable resource for weather professionals, amateurs, and local enthusiasts alike.

Weirton was originally settled as the village of Holliday’s Cove, a strategic fortification along the Ohio River in northwestern Virginia. In 1909, a tinplate mill was established in northern Holliday’s Cove, and Weirton was born. Thousands of immigrants of many nationalities came here to work and live, while Ernest T. Weir created his life’s dream of a fully integrated steel plant. Weirton became the “Largest Unincorporated Town in the Country” and remained unincorporated for 38 years. In 1947, Weirton combined with Holliday’s Cove, Weirton Heights, and Marland Heights to become the official City of Weirton. Thomas E. Millsop, president of Weirton Steel Co., became the first mayor, and the mill became a major factor in the city’s success. Many historic moments, including the record snowfall of Thanksgiving weekend 1950, were highlighted in the Weirton Steel Employees’ Bulletin. Weirton captures this event and tells the story of the “New City,” which thrived in the 1950s and 1960s.

Useless Arithmetic

Why Environmental Scientists Can't Predict the Future

Author: Orrin H. Pilkey,Linda Pilkey-Jarvis

Publisher: Columbia University Press

ISBN: 0231506996

Category: Science

Noted coastal geologist Orrin Pilkey and environmental scientist Linda Pilkey-Jarvis show that the quantitative mathematical models policy makers and government administrators use to form environmental policies are seriously flawed. Based on unrealistic and sometimes false assumptions, these models often yield answers that support unwise policies. Writing for the general, nonmathematician reader and using examples from throughout the environmental sciences, Pilkey and Pilkey-Jarvis show how unquestioned faith in mathematical models can blind us to the hard data and sound judgment of experienced scientific fieldwork. They begin with a riveting account of the extinction of the North Atlantic cod on the Grand Banks of Canada. Next they engage in a general discussion of the limitations of many models across a broad array of crucial environmental subjects. The book offers fascinating case studies depicting how the seductiveness of quantitative models has led to unmanageable nuclear waste disposal practices, poisoned mining sites, unjustifiable faith in predicted sea level rise rates, bad predictions of future shoreline erosion rates, overoptimistic cost estimates of artificial beaches, and a host of other thorny problems. The authors demonstrate how many modelers have been reckless, employing fudge factors to assure "correct" answers and caring little if their models actually worked. A timely and urgent book written in an engaging style, Useless Arithmetic evaluates the assumptions behind models, the nature of the field data, and the dialogue between modelers and their "customers."
