This book provides a full analytical overview of the establishment and functioning of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon, the newest and most controversial of the UN-sponsored international criminal courts. In 2005, Lebanese Prime Minister Rafic Hariri was assassinated in a huge blast that reverberated across Lebanon and the region. The Tribunal was established with a mandate to try the perpetrators of the Hariri killing, as well as those responsible for other killings that are 'connected' to this core crime. Individuals associated with the Hezbollah group have been indicted to be tried in the court in The Hague-but in their absence as their locations are unknown. The Tribunal is the UN's first attempt at addressing terrorism in an international criminal court, and the first attempt to set up international trials following crimes committed in the Middle East region. The court's narrow mandate and unique procedures have led many to question what kind of precedent it will set in a volatile region. This book looks at how the court was established, its foundational principles based on the Statute of the International Criminal Court and Lebanese domestic law, and the possible further development of its case law. It provides an authoritative guide to the procedure of the Tribunal, the status of the Registry, the rights of suspects and accused, trials in absentia, and the regulation of the conduct of counsel, drawing on comparisons to other international courts. The authors include those involved in setting up the court, prosecutors, defence counsel for the suspects, as well as judges and academic commentators who are experts on the issues covered in the book. They provide a probing insight into how the Tribunal came into being, its challenges, controversies, and its achievements to date.

This volume considers the way in which the focus on individual rights may constitute an obstacle to ensuring fairness in criminal proceedings. The increasingly cosmopolitan nature of criminal justice, forcing legal systems with different institutional forms and practices to interact with each other as they attempt to combat crime beyond national borders, has accentuated the need for systems to seek legitimacy beyond their domestic traditions. Fairness, expressed in terms of the right to a fair trial in provisions such as Article 6 of the European Convention on Human Rights, has emerged across Europe as the principal means of guaranteeing the legitimacy of criminal proceedings. The consequence of this is that criminal procedure doctrines are framed overwhelmingly in 'constitutional' terms – the protection of defence rights is necessary to restrict and legitimate the state's mandate to prosecute crime. Yet there are various problems with relying solely or predominantly on defence rights as a means of ensuring that proceedings are 'fair' or legitimate and these issues are rarely discussed in the academic literature. In this volume, scholars from the disciplines of law, philosophy and sociology challenge various normative assumptions underpinning our understanding of fairness in criminal proceedings.

Fingerprint analysis may be performed as part of many jobs, including crime scene technician, latent print examiner, criminalist, latent print technician, forensic specialist, and forensic scientist. Regardless of one’s specific discipline, a background knowledge of scientific practices in handling and analyzing fingerprint evidence is critical for success. The best way to comprehend the principles and concepts of any science learned in a classroom is to perform experiments. The exercises in Fingerprint Analysis Laboratory Workbook address all aspects of fingerprint theory, investigation, processing, comparisons, and research. Designed specifically to parallel the Fundamentals of Fingerprint Analysis textbook, the laboratory exercises correspond with the textbook chapters, with each exercise in the lab chapter putting into practice the concepts covered in the text chapter. Each lab follows the same format, starting with the objectives of the experiment and background information needed before performing the experiment. This is followed by a list of required materials, the lab exercises, and post-lab questions for students to test their assimilation of what they’ve learned. Many of the laboratory exercises may be completed either at home or in a laboratory setting. Exercises and photographs enhance the text, making it an ideal hands-on learning tool.

Criminal Justice Procedure gives clear guidance on the most common questions faced by today's law enforcement, offering fresh look at 21st century pre-trial protocol. Unlike other case books, this newly revised edition eschews legal theory in favor of the practical know-how needed to not to parse, but apply criminal law. Emphasis has been placed on just exactly how practitioners should conduct hot-button procedures such as airport and border searches. Moreover, the book also addresses the often dire implications of deviating from proper practice - how a false step can translate into a violation of individual rights, or the inability to successfully prosecute the guilty. This edition has been specifically designed for CJ undergraduate programs (rather than higher-level law schools) and completely reorganized for a more logical flow of topics. Moreover, it is newly focused on the most crucial practical applications of the law in the CJ context. There is also added emphasis on the Fourth, Fifth, and Sixth Amendments. * Renewed emphasis on information needed by CJ undergraduates and practitioners, rather than law students * Includes a completely reorganized, more logical table of contents that supports the development of those reasoning and critical thinking skills needed to put the law in action * Added pedagogy and a much richer set of accompanying online resources help students apply case law to other sets of facts
