One woman’s journey to find the lost love her grandfather left behind when he fled pre-World War II Europe, and an exploration into family identity, myth, and memory. Years after her grandfather’s death, journalist Sarah Wildman stumbled upon a cache of his letters in a file labeled “Correspondence: Patients A–G.” What she found inside weren’t dry medical histories; instead what was written opened a path into the destroyed world that was her family’s prewar Vienna. One woman’s letters stood out: those from Valy—Valerie Scheftel. Her grandfather’s lover who had remained behind when he fled Europe six months after the Nazis annexed Austria. Valy’s name wasn’t unknown to her—Wildman had once asked her grandmother about a dark-haired young woman whose images she found in an old photo album. “She was your grandfather’s true love,” her grandmother said at the time, and refused any other questions. But now, with the help of the letters, Wildman started to piece together Valy’s story. They revealed a woman desperate to escape and clinging to the memory of a love that defined her years of freedom. Obsessed with Valy’s story, Wildman began a quest that lasted years and spanned continents. She discovered, to her shock, an entire world of other people searching for the same woman. On in the course of discovering Valy’s ultimate fate, she was forced to reexamine the story of her grandfather’s triumphant escape and how this history fit within her own life and in the process, she rescues a life seemingly lost to history.

Love Letters

Saving Romance in the Digital Age

In today’s world of Tinder and texting, do we write and save love letters anymore? Are we more likely to save a screen shot of a text exchange or a box of paper letters from a lover? How might these different ways to store a love letter make us feel? Sociologist Michelle Janning’s Love Letters: Saving Romance in the Digital Age offers a new twist on the study of love letters: what people do with them and whether digital or paper format matters. Through stories, a rich review of past research, and her own survey findings, Janning uncovers whether and how people from different groups (including gender and age) approach their love letter "curatorial practices" in an era when digitization of communication is nearly ubiquitous. She investigates the importance of space and time, showing how our connection to the material world and our attraction to nostalgia matter in actions as seemingly small and private as saving, storing, stumbling upon, or even burning a love letter. Janning provides a framework for understanding why someone may prefer digital or paper love letters, and what that preference says about a person’s access and attachment to powerful cultural values such as individualization, taking time in a hectic world, longevity, privacy, and keeping cherished things in a safe place. Ultimately, Janning contends, the cultural values that tell us how romantic love should be defined are more powerful than the format our love letters take. Her work fits within larger academic questions about the sociology of emotions, how culture works, the importance of objects in social relations, and the significance of privilege in everyday life.

In most religious traditions, a protagonist is called into the wilderness for a period of tribulation and there receives a new name. This is my story of that time in my life. I AM Waiting For A Name. It begins with "Minor Works" - written in childhood. We then begin to Emulate those whom we admire (Allusions), finally blossoming as an individual in the right time (Kairas). The struggle to believe forces one to re-examine values and forget those illusions which seperate us from responsibility (a stone so heavy). We find that what we held dearest is little more than nothing, and we elude the plan God has for us.

For the Love of Teachers is a tribute to those who possess the remarkable ability to exercise patience and understanding and to offer guidance along an unfamiliar path. The influence these dedicated teachers have is reflected in many of the goals their students set and achieve every day; whether learning to tie their shoes, memorizing multiplication tables, or excelling on the SATs—all basic steps which are vital to their growth and self-esteem. For this reason, among many others, the importance of these positive role models in our children's lives, as well as our own, can't be stressed enough. For the Love of Teachers is the ideal way to express the admiration and appreciation we share for them. The reasons why someone chooses to teach isn't always clear, but what many teachers have in common is the desire to make a difference in the lives of others—a task that can be bittersweet. For the Love of Teachers is filled with inspiring stories that do just that. Some are warm, humorous, and heartfelt, while others illustrate difficult or unexpected situations with the lessons learned along the way. Readers will identify with many of the students who recall that special teacher who challenged them to find their hidden talent, motivated them to push a little harder, or to simply surpass their own expectations. For the Love of Teachers is a special way of saying thanks to all the teachers who've sacrificed their time to better the lives of others.
