Nach Stationen u.a. in Königsberg, Riga, London, Paris, und in der Schweiz kommt Wagner schließlich in Bayreuth an, das bis heute untrennbar mit seinem Namen verbunden ist. Seine finanziellen Schwierigkeiten hat der selbstbewußte Mann von kleinem Wuchs als »lächerliche Schulden« empfunden, denen erheblich größere »Aktiva« gegenüberstünden. Und in der Tat ist seine Wirkungsmacht auf die ihm nachfolgende Musik wohl einzigartig. Zu einer umstrittenen Figur ist Richard Wagner wegen seiner Auslegbarkeit im Sinne des Nationalsozialismus geworden, der er maßgeblich durch seine antisemitische Schrift »Das Judenthum in der Musik« Vorschub geleistet hat.
