Introduction to Linear Control Systems is designed as a standard introduction to linear control systems for all those who one way or another deal with control systems. It can be used as a comprehensive up-to-date textbook for a one-semester 3-credit undergraduate course on linear control systems as the first course on this topic at university. This includes the faculties of electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, chemical and petroleum engineering, industrial engineering, civil engineering, bio-engineering, economics, mathematics, physics, management and social sciences, etc. The book covers foundations of linear control systems, their raison detre, different types, modelling, representations, computations, stability concepts, tools for time-domain and frequency-domain analysis and synthesis, and fundamental limitations, with an emphasis on frequency-domain methods. Every chapter includes a part on further readings where more advanced topics and pertinent references are introduced for further studies. The presentation is theoretically firm, contemporary, and self-contained. Appendices cover Laplace transform and differential equations, dynamics, MATLAB and SIMULINK, treatise on stability concepts and tools, treatise on Routh-Hurwitz method, random optimization techniques as well as convex and non-convex problems, and sample midterm and endterm exams. The book is divided to the sequel 3 parts plus appendices. PART I: In this part of the book, chapters 1-5, we present foundations of linear control systems. This includes: the introduction to control systems, their raison detre, their different types, modelling of control systems, different methods for their representation and fundamental computations, basic stability concepts and tools for both analysis and design, basic time domain analysis and design details, and the root locus as a stability analysis and synthesis tool. PART II: In this part of the book, Chapters 6-9, we present what is generally referred to as the frequency domain methods. This refers to the experiment of applying a sinusoidal input to the system and studying its output. There are basically three different methods for representation and studying of the data of the aforementioned frequency response experiment: these are the Nyquist plot, the Bode diagram, and the Krohn-Manger-Nichols chart. We study these methods in details. We learn that the output is also a sinusoid with the same frequency but generally with different phase and magnitude. By dividing the output by the input we obtain the so-called sinusoidal or frequency transfer function of the system which is the same as the transfer function when the Laplace variable s is substituted with . Finally we use the Bode diagram for the design process. PART III: In this part, Chapter 10, we introduce some miscellaneous advanced topics under the theme fundamental limitations which should be included in this undergraduate course at least in an introductory level. We make bridges between some seemingly disparate aspects of a control system and theoretically complement the previously studied subjects. Appendices: The book contains seven appendices. Appendix A is on the Laplace transform and differential equations. Appendix B is an introduction to dynamics. Appendix C is an introduction to MATLAB, including SIMULINK. Appendix D is a survey on stability concepts and tools. A glossary and road map of the available stability concepts and tests is provided which is missing even in the research literature. Appendix E is a survey on the Routh-Hurwitz method, also missing in the literature. Appendix F is an introduction to random optimization techniques and convex and non-convex problems. Finally, appendix G presents sample midterm and endterm exams, which are class-tested several times.

Rem tene, verba sequentur (Gaius J. Victor, Rome VI century b.c.) The ultimate goal of this book is to bring the fundamental issues of information granularity, inference tools and problem solving procedures into a coherent, unified, and fully operational framework. The objective is to offer the reader a comprehensive, self-contained, and uniform exposure to the subject. The strategy is to isolate some fundamental bricks of Computational Intelligence in terms of key problems and methods, and discuss their implementation and underlying rationale within a well structured and rigorous conceptual framework as well as carefully related to various application facets. The main assumption is that a deep understanding of the key problems will allow the reader to compose into a meaningful mosaic the puzzle pieces represented by the immense varieties of approaches present in the literature and in the computational practice. All in all, the main approach advocated in the monograph consists of a sequence of steps offering solid conceptual fundamentals, presenting a carefully selected collection of design methodologies, discussing a wealth of development guidelines, and exemplifying them with a pertinent, accurately selected illustrative material.

Developed from the author’s academic and industrial experiences, Modeling and Control of Engineering Systems provides a unified treatment of the modeling of mechanical, electrical, fluid, and thermal systems and then systematically covers conventional, advanced, and intelligent control, instrumentation, experimentation, and design. It includes theory, analytical techniques, popular computer tools, simulation details, and applications. Overcoming the deficiencies of other modeling and control books, this text relates the model to the physical system and addresses why a particular control technique is suitable for controlling the system. Although MATLAB®, Simulink®, and LabVIEWTM are used, the author fully explains the fundamentals and analytical basis behind the methods, the choice of proper tools to analyze a given problem, the ways to interpret and validate the results, and the limitations of the software tools. This approach enables readers to thoroughly grasp the core foundation of the subject and understand how to apply the concepts in practice. Control ensures accurate operation of a system. Proper control of an engineering system requires a basic understanding and a suitable representation (model) of the system. This book builds up expertise in modeling and control so that readers can further their analytical skills in hands-on settings.

Now that modern machinery and electromechanical devices are typically being controlled using analog and digital electronics and computers, the technologies of mechanical engineering in such a system can no longer be isolated from those of electronic and computer engineering. Mechatronics: A Foundation Course applies a unified approach to meet this challenge, developing an understanding of the synergistic and concurrent use of mechanics, electronics, computer engineering, and intelligent control systems for everything from modeling and analysis to design, implementation, control, and integration of smart electromechanical products. This book explains the fundamentals of integrating different types of components and functions, both mechanical and electrical, to achieve optimal operation that meets a desired set of performance specifications. This integration will benefit performance, efficiency, reliability, cost, and environmental impact. With useful features that distinguish it from other comparable books, this solid learning tool: Prioritizes readability and convenient reference Develops and presents key concepts and formulas, summarizing them in windows, tables, and lists in a user-friendly format Includes numerous worked examples, problems, and exercises related to real-life situations and the practice of mechatronics Describes and employs MATLAB®, Simulink®, LabVIEW®, and associated toolboxes, providing various illustrative examples for their use Explores the limitations of available software tools and teaches the reader how to choose proper tools to solve a given problem and interpret and assess the validity of the results The text conveys the considerable experience that author Clarence de Silva gained from teaching mechatronics at the graduate and professional levels, as well as from his time working in industry for organizations such as IBM, Westinghouse Electric, and NASA. It systematically and seamlessly incorporates many different underlying engineering fundamentals into analytical methods, modeling approaches, and design techniques for mechatronics—all in a single resource.
