John Rawls' work on justice has perhaps drawn more commentary and aroused wider attention than any other work in moral or political philosophy in the 20th century. Some of these essays articulate views distinct from those in his books.

A pioneer in bringing mathematical methads into everyday use in economics, Lloyd A. Metzler is well known for his adroit use of formal tools and exceptionally readable prose style which have provided a generation of economists with clear solutions to difficult analytical problems. The papers collected in this volume, including four previously unpublished, retain a freshness and clarity that is readily recognized by today's students of economics. Over the years Mr. Metzler's contributions to economic theory have ranged widely over the fields of international economics, macroeconomic theory, business fluctuations, and the mathematical theory of general equilibrium. Most notably, he carries Lord Keynes's theories further, working out the essential properties of the foreign-trade multiplier. His discussions of tariff repercussions, capital transfers, and stability conditions in the foreign-exchange market are of vital importance to today's dramatic efforts to achieve economic stability throughout the world. Collected Papers, enhanced by many tables and figures and clearly indicative of the author's far-reaching economic mind, is organized into four sections: The Theory of International Trade; Money, Interest, and Prices; Business Cycles and Economic Fluctuations; and Mathematical Economics and Statistics. Two of the articles in this volume were part of the author's doctoral thesis which was awarded the David A. Wells Prize at Harvard University.

In 1996 the AMS awarded Goro Shimura the Steele Prize for Lifetime Achievement :" To Goro Shimura for his important and extensive work on arithmetical geometry and automorphic forms; concepts introduced by him were often seminal, and fertile ground for new developments, as witnessed by the many notations in number theory that carry his name and that have long been familiar to workers in the field." 103 of Shimura ́s most important papers are collected in four volumes. Volume II contains his mathematical papers from 1967 to 1977 and some notes to the articles.

Volumes I-VI of the Collected Papers of Charles Sanders Peirce are being reissued in response to a growing interest in Peirce's thought--a development that was prophesied by John Dewey when he reviewed the first volume of these papers on their appearance in 1931. Writing in The New Republic, Mr. Dewey said, "Nothing much will happen in philosophy as long as a main object among philosophers is defense of some formulated historical position. I do not know of any other thinker more calculated than Peirce to give emancipation from the intellectual fortifications of the past and to arouse a fresh imagination."

Robert Aumann's groundbreaking career in game theory has spanned over 35 years. These two volumes provide convenient access to all of his major research—from his doctoral dissertation in 1956 to papers as recent as January 1995. Threaded through all of Aumann's work (symbolized in his thesis on knots) is the study of relationships between different ideas, between different phenomena, and between ideas and phenomena. "When you look closely at one scientific idea," writes Aumann, "you find it hitched to all others. It is these hitches that I have tried to study." The papers are organized in several categories: general, knot theory, decision theory (utility and subjective probability), strategic games, coalitional games, and mathematical methods. Aumann has written an introduction to each of these groups that briefly describes the content and background of each paper, including the motivation and the research process, and relates it to other work in the collection and to work by others. There is also a citation index that allows readers to trace the considerable body of literature which cites Aumann's own work.

The influence of Ramanujan on number theory is without parallel in mathematics. His papers, problems, and letters have spawned a remarkable number of later results by many different mathematicians. Here, his 37 published papers, most of his first two and last letters to Hardy, the famous 58 problems submitted to the Journal of the Indian Mathematical Society, and the commentary of the original editors (Hardy, Seshu Aiyar and Wilson) are reprinted again, after having been unavailable for some time. In this printing of Ramanujan's collected papers, Bruce Berndt provides an annotated guide to Ramanujan's work and to the mathematics it inspired over the last three-quarters of a century. The historical development of ideas is traced in the commentary and by citations to the copious references. The editor has done the mathematical world a tremendous service that few others would be qualified to do.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the Third International Conference on Integrated Formal Methods, IFM 2002, held in Turku, Finland, in May 2002. The 18 revised full papers presented together with three invited papers were carefully reviewed and selected from a total of 46 submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections on integration, simulation, and animation; from specification to verification; statcharts and B: integration and translation; model checkers and theorem provers; links between object-Z and CSP; combining graphical and formal approaches; and refinement and proof.

Hellmuth Kneser (1898-1973) is the second of three mathematicians from consecutive generations of the Kneser family, all ofwhom made groundbreaking mathematical contributions on a wide range of topics. It was only in recent times that mathematicians recognized how Hellmuth Kneser’s work influenced the course of topology and the theory of several complex variables. For this book, presenting the entire collection of Kneser’s papers published in journals, experts in various areas have written English commentaries. Kneser’s articles are in German, with the exception of two papers written in French.
