Sea Level Rise, History and Consequences includes a special emphasis on the evidence for historical sea level change; case studies are used to demonstrate the resulting consequences. A CD-ROM is included which contain tide gauge data and trends of relative sea level from the Permanent Service for Mean Sea Level. The material on the CD-ROM is either in the form of text files, or web sites that can be opened by widely available web-browsers. Sea level is expected to rise as much as 60-100 centimeters over the next century due to greenhouse-induced global warming -- or at least that is what the some scientists predict. However, the concept of sea level is extremely complex, which makes the prediction of sea level rise anything but certain. The reviewers are in consensus in enthusiastically endorsing this comprehensive book and CD-ROM treatment. This book will be a comprehensive review of the subject using the data themselves (on CD-ROM) to illustrate the principles involved, rather than detailed mathematical treatments. History and Consequences

Repetitive surveys of the above MSL beach were made along 20 profile locations of Ludlam Beach, New Jersey, from 1962 to 1972. The surveys provided data on temporal and spatial beach volume change and shoreline position. Storm changes were highly variable, with adjacent profiles often showing opposite trends. Sand volume losses from above MSL, resulting from seven storms, averaged 2.3 cubic yards per foot or 80,000 cubic yards per storm. For three of the seven storms the average change in MSL shoreline position suggested accretion while the beaches actually suffered a volumetric loss. Clear seasonal trends in the volume of sand above MSL were evident. A net accretion occurred from June through October, while November through May was a period of sand loss. The average seasonal range in sand volume above MSL was 18 cubic yards per foot. The seasonal range of sand volume change within the Sea Isle City groin system, located in the middle of the study area, averaged less than 10 cubic yards per foot. Yearly changes in sand volume varied from a gain of 2.9 cubic yards per foot to a loss of 4.6 cubic yards per foot. Net yearly sand volume changes over the 10-year survey interval averaged -1.12 cubic yards per foot per year (a loss of 40,000 cubic yards per year from the entire island above MSL). The average MSL shoreline retreat rate for the same interval was 8.2 feet per year.

Coastal inlets dot the world's coastline, serving as important conduits for exchange of organic and inorganic materials between the continents and the oceans. In addition, inlets are the focal points of navigation pathways between deep water and coastal ports, a function often requiring alteration of the inlet to assure safe navigation. Particularly for inlets along mobile barrier beaches, frequent dredging is often required to maintain navigation clearances. The papers in this book primarily discuss research relating to tidal inlets along barrier beach systems and illustrate the scientific approaches appropriate for examining multiple inlet stability. The aim is to provide a scientific basis for effective management. By proper and in-depth scientific analysis, more appropriate inlet management can be effected, to the benefit of the environment and the inhabitants of coastal areas. Case examples are included that will be useful to those who may wish to pursue the widermanagement and policy implications.

This volume is the result of an initiative of the Commission on the Coastal Environment of the International Geographical Union. The initial concept from which the plan has proceeded was presented at the 24th International Geographical Congress in Japan in 1980. AUTHORSHIP AND COVERAGE All of the articles in this volume have been written by specialists familiar with the coastal segment discussed. Nearly all have been prepared by citizens of the country (and, for that matter, even each subregion) considered. In the case of exceptions (e.g. Suriname), the authors have conducted fieldwork on the coast of the country they treat. In order to preserve the "on-the-spot" integrity of the volume, it was decided not to fill in the blanks along the world's coastline with library researched chapters. Thus, coverage is variable. Nearly every coastal country in Europe is represented whereas for Africa and South America there are major gaps. In addition, there are 2 instances of overlap. In the case of England (with a shoreline of nearly 3,000 km) a complementary chapter on Lincolnshire (with a shoreline of only 155 km) is included. The other case is the general article on the Baltic Coast of the USSR which is supported by chapters on Estonia and Lithuania.
