White Kids in an Urban School

Racial and ethnic minority groups in the United States have been growing rapidly in recent decades. Projections based on census data indicate that, in coming years, white people will statistically dominate noticeably fewer regions and public spaces. How will this reversal of minority status affect ideas about race? In spaces dominated by people of color, will attitudes about white privilege change? Or, will deeply rooted beliefs about racial inequality be resilient to numerical shifts in strength? In An Unexpected Minority, sociologist Edward Morris addresses these far-reaching questions by exploring attitudes about white identity in a Texas middle school composed predominantly of African Americans, Latinos, and Asians. Based on his ethnographic research, Morris argues that lower-income white students in urban schools do not necessarily maintain the sort of white privilege documented in other settings. Within the student body, African American students were more frequently the "cool" kids, and white students adopted elements of black culture-including dress, hairstyle, and language-to gain acceptance. Morris observes, however, that racial inequalities were not always reversed. Stereotypes that cast white students as better behaved and more academically gifted were often reinforced, even by African American teachers. Providing a new and timely perspective to the significant role that non-whites play in the construction of attitudes about whiteness, this book takes an important step in advancing the discussion of racial inequality and its future in this country.

Theology and Witness in the Poetry and Thought of Charles Williams, Micheal O'Siadhail, and Geoffrey Hill

Author: David C. Mahan

Publisher: Wipf and Stock Publishers

ISBN: 1630876968

Category: Religion

Can poetry matter to Christian theology? David Mahan asks in the introduction to this interdisciplinary work. Does the study of poetry represent a serious theological project? What does poetry have to contribute to the public tasks of theology and the Church? How can theologians, clergy and other ministry professionals, and Christian laypeople benefit from an earnest study of poetry? A growing number of professional theologians today seek to push theological inquiry beyond the relative seclusion of academic specialization into a broader marketplace of public ideas, and to recast the theological task as an integrative discipline, wholly engaged with the issues and sensibilities of the age. Accordingly, such scholars seek to draw upon and engage the insights and practices of a variety of cultural resources, including those of the arts, in their theological projects. Arguing that poetry can be a form of theological discourse, Mahan shows how poetry offers rich theological resources and instruction for the Christian church. In drawing attention to the peculiar advantages it affords, this book addresses one of the greatest challenges facing the church today: the difficulty of effectively communicating the Christian gospel with increasingly disaffected late-modern people.

Josiah Stokes, (Josh), is the 12-year-old son of an escaped slave with a desire to learn. He is encouraged and supported by his teacher at the unique inter-racial school. He also helps in his uncle’s general store after school and is reluctant to face local bullies. These characteristics and the town’s growing prejudice toward blacks lead to constant pestering by a bully and his gang. Josh meets Seamus Maloney, the 14-year-old son of poor new Irish immigrants in the town; he cannot read and lacks confidence, but he has a gift for playing the tin whistle. As their friendship grows, Josh helps Seamus learn to read and the favour is returned as Seamus sticks up for Josh when bullies pick on him. Together they find a joy in making music. The boys’ adventures are set against the backdrop of growing prejudice as more slaves seek freedom in Canada. There is a fire on the Amherstburg dock and a steamship trip to Toronto to pick up Seamus’ cousins who were orphaned as a result of the terrible sea journey from Ireland. The details of the book reveal something of pioneer life as well as the desperation of Irish people who faced a voyage on a wretched “coffin” ship rather than die of starvation in Ireland. Readers not only experience a friendship of unusual strength but also part of the history of Amherstburg, Ontario, a last stop on the Underground Railroad. The story of two young boys’ respect for one another in the historical context of An Unexpected Friendship leaves readers with the realization that all men truly are created equal.
